Flamenco NYC is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of flamenco through the development of a multicultural flamenco arts community that assists, supports, and enriches society through dance, music, teaching, performance and artistic awareness. We provide the Greater New York City community with comprehensive educational programs and special performances that focus on flamenco dance, music and Literature. Flamenco is a cultural practice that is included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding, which is composed of intangible heritage elements that concerned communities and states parties consider require urgent measures to keep them alive. |
The workshop is conducted by premiere flamenco performer and instructor Ms. Dionisia García, a native from Spain and trained Castilian Spanish speaker.
In our unique session, students will gain knowledge of the history of flamenco and how this living dance form is intertwined with the history and culture of Spain as well as the lives of the Spanish people. Just as importantly, they will have the opportunity to experience and engage with flamenco first hand through activities and exercises that will connect them physically and practically with flamenco music, rhythm, and dance. Literature: Students will delve into the essence of a Spanish writer and we will be dedicating one part of the workshop for this purpose. It will be intertwined with the previous practice of the flamenco dance and music we learn in the beginning of the class. Language: The workshop can be conducted in Spanish, English or both to promote inclusivity and accommodate all students. For groups that want to emphasize the practice of Spanish language, the session can be tailored or, if you choose, there may be a focus on pronunciation and vocabulary ( it will be done mostly through the work with the Spanish writer we pick for this workshop). About Dionisia García Born in Spain, Dionisia García studied classic ballet with Marichu and Emilia Bailo, and flamenco at the prestigious Madrid flamenco studio, Amor de Dios, with María Magdalena, Tomás de Madrid, Carmela Greco, La Tati, Belén Fernández among others.
